Hollering is one of the world’s oldest forms of long‑distance communication. Communities across the globe have used hollers to call for help, coordinate work, and express emotion. In the United States, rural farming communities practiced hollering for hundreds of years. In this presentation, Lynch‑Thomason will explore hollering traditions from the North Carolina Piedmont and the Deep South, sharing examples like cow‑calling, water calls, distress calls, and expressive hollers—and she’ll get the audience involved too!
