An in-person workshop exploring traditional songs and folklore of Midsummer
Midsummer (also known as Saint John’s Day and Litha) has long been a much treasured holiday across Europe. This, the longest day of the year, has been celebrated with bonfires, divination, bathing in rivers and lakes, herb harvesting, and revelry! In this workshop, we’ll explore a beautiful mix of chants, folk songs and ballads that connect us to these traditions and evoke the spirit of Midsummer! Our songs will include several easy-to-learn English-language chants and songs, sourced from or inspired by English and Scottish traditions, as well as songs created by Saro. These songs will be woven around traditional songs from Ukraine and Lithuania, connecting us to forms of animacy that have been maintained for thousands of years.
During the workshop, you’ll receive lyrics to our songs, and you are welcome to take audio recordings. Afterwards, you’ll receive prepared audio recordings for any non-English songs we learn, as well as recordings for pronunciation.
