Imbolc/ Goddess Brigid Playlist for You!
Here is a playlist for your Imbolc season: a meditative exploration of the deity/spirit/s-turned-saint Brigid of Ireland, whose celebration is intertwined with Imbolc, an upcoming Irish holiday heralding the beginning of spring. The songs here are often sweet, slow invocations and prayers for the goddess Brigid and her themes of compassion, milk, water, and seeds. In this season of unrest and violence, I've been thinking about what aspects of her speak the most strongly to me. In particular, I'm moved by the ways her nature encompasses themes of nurturing and justice (thus, our last song on the playlist, “Never One Thing.") As a nurturer, Brigid's pagan and Christian lore promote her as a healer, midwife, wet nurse, and provider of milk and food to those in need. As a bringer of justice, she is remembered as a smith with her hammer, a fiery arrow of revelation, and bringer of victory in her British sister form of Brigantia. We need both nurturing and justice (sometimes these are the same thing, to be sure), and Brigid may have some answers for us in this moment when we are exploring how to support our communities and what forms justice should take against people who bring violence to our doorsteps. May Brigid work through us this season, and always.
